Gayle heroics in vain as Punjab down Bangalore

BANGALORE, May 3: King XI Punjab beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by four wickets during their Indian Premier League match here at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on late Wednesday.



Chasing a victory target of 159, opener Mandeep Singh (43), Nitin Saini (50) and skipper Hussey (45) starred for the visitors before facing slight batting hitches towards the end of their run chase. [break]



They needed five runs in the last over. Needing two off the last balls, Piyush Chawla struck a six off the penultimate ball of the innings, capping off a splendid winning and sending the Punjab camp into jubilation.



Earlier, Chris Gayle, who was dropped on 39, rode on his luck and went on to play a blistering knock of 71 off just 42 balls to help Bangalore post a competitive 158 for five.



Likewise, Virat Kohli scored 45 off 42 balls, while sharing a pivotal 118-run partnership for the second wicket with Gayle to resurrect the hosts’ innings.



With the win, Punjab are now elevated to 4rth spot in the points table while, Bangalore are placed 6th in the nine-team tournament.
