KATHMANDU, May 13: Caretaker Prime Minister and Chairman of Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has hinted at receding impasse in the parliament and calming down street protest against president Dr Ram Baran Yadav.

During his meeting with two Madhesi People’s Rights Forum stalwarts, Upendra Yadav and Jaya Prakash Prasad Gupta, at his residence Wednesday morning, Dahal seemed positive to reduce the protests. [break]

“We urged the prime minister to wait for Supreme Court’s orders on the issue of president’s move and end the impasse in the parliament that has hindered all the political way out to national problems,’ said Gupta. “He was positive in our request.”

Because of the obstruction by the prime minister´s party lawmakers, the speaker has not been able to read out the letter about the prime minister´s resignation and the parliament has failed to eneter process for electing a new prime minister. Prime minister stepped down on May 4.

In Wednesday´s meeting with the MPRF leaders, Dahal, however, turned down the request by Yadav and Gupta to join the UML-led government to give it a shape of national consensus government. “We gave example of Maoists’ participation in the Girija Prasad Koirala-led government and requested the prime minister to participate in the new government but he did not accept our request,” Gupta said.

On Tuesday, Dahal had taken fresh initiatives to delay the formation of a new government by requesting madhesi leaders not to rush to support to the UML-led coalition. Dahal said the Madhesi parties’ support would close the doors for formation of a national consensus government desired by the Maoists in the near future.

The Madhesi leaders, however, had ruled out possibility of the Maoists leading the national consensus government even if the United Democratic Madhesi Front delays to extend their support to the UML-led faction.

Madhesi parties are set to meet Wednesday afternoon to decide their support to the parties aspiring to lead the new coalition. They are waiting for clear commitment from the NC and UML leaders on the issues of Madhes, especially the government’s eight-point agreement made with the front back in February 2008.

“We will hold a meeting this afternoon and take a clear decision about our support to the new coalition and our participation,” Gupta said.
