POKHARA, Dec 8: The Kaski police has taken initiative to control drug and alcohol abuse by teens not through punishment but spiritual counseling. With the help of Om Shanti, a spiritual organization, the police hopes to change the approach and attitude of teens so that they take life more seriously and positively.

“We thought spiritual counseling was a better way to deal with drug and alcohol problem of the teens,” said chief of the district police SP Yadavraj Khanal. [break]

"Keeping the youths locked up in prison for 24 hours did not work as a deterrence. They have been found involved in similar activities more than once."

However, it does not mean each and every case would be dealt in the same manner. In the first phase of the campaign, 15 among 20 teens in police custody have been sent to Om Shanti camp to immerse themselves in spiritual atmosphere.

According to Khanal, at the Om Shanti camp the youths will attend a two-hour long lecture on life and its real mission everyday. He said several other similar campaigns regarding character building are in the pipeline.
