KATHMANDU, Jan 5: Amidst heightening intra-party tension, Maoist Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya has stated that he is not against the peace process and constitution drafting, but reiterated that he cannot compromise on the party´s fundamental principles.

Baidya expressed the view during his meeting with Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai at the former´s residence at Gongabu Thursday. [break]

Bhattarai had called on Baidya, who leads the party´s radical camp, to seek the latter´s assistance for completing the peace process and constitution drafting.

“There is no alternative to concluding the peace process and constitution drafting. Let´s stand together on issues where we see eye to eye and run discussion forums on the issues that we differ over,” Bhattarai´s aide Biswadeep Pandey quoted the former as saying at the meeting.

According to Pandey, Baidya was positive about running discussion forums on the ideological issues. “We are also not against peace. We are also having discussions on the issue at the central committee meeting. Let´s see the development in the meeting,” Pandey quoted Baidya as saying.

During the meeting Bhattarai had also requested Baidya to reconcile with the party establishment and prove false the rumors about an imminent split of the party.

The ongoing central committee meeting of the party has been witnessing fierce exchanges between the party establishment and the radicals.

The hardliners have accused the party establishment of deviating from the party ideology, while the latter have accused the hardliners of being ultra-leftist hell-bent on undoing the party´s political achievements.

In the meeting, the hardliners have challenged the political document presented by Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and presented their own. As the intra-party factionalism grows, it is still unclear how the meeting concludes.
