Women U-19 cricket to begin on Thursday

KATHMANDU, Dec 26: Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) on Monday made public groupings, dates and venues for Women´s National U-19 Cricket Tournament. This is the first age-group national tournament in women´s section. Earlier, the CAN has organized four editions of the Women´s National Cricket Tournament.



Cricketing Region No 3 (Kathmandu) is to host the Women´s National U-19 Cricket Tournament, which starts on Wednesday and concludes on Sunday. The eight cricketing regions will contest in the tournament.[break]



According to the CAN, Region No 1 (Biratnagar), Region No 2 (Birgunj), Region No 6 (Baitadi) and Region No 7 (Janakpur) are in the group ´A´ of the tournament while Region No 3 (Kathmandu), Region No 4 (Bhairahawa), Region No 5 (Nepalgunj) and Region No 8 (Pokhara) are in the group ´B´.



Top two teams from each group will qualify to the semifinals. The matches will be played on the TU Cricket Ground, Kirtipur, and Engineering College Ground, Pulchowk.

The CAN said selectors would select players for the ACC Women´s U-19 Championship based on players´ perfromance in the tournament. ACC Women´s U-19 Championship will be held in Kuwait from February 1 to 10, 2012.



Kathmandu announces 14-member squad



Region No 3 (Kathmandu), which is also the host of the tournament, picked a 14-member team for the tournament.



Shraddha Aryal (Captain), Jeny Sing Thapa, Sangeeta Gauchan, Kamala Rai, Asmina Karmachayra, Sandhya KC, Rabina Bhandari, Sajani Shrestha, Christine Tamang, Karuna Lama, Anita Tamang, Mallika Basnet, Sumina Maharjan and Sila Rijal have been included in the Kathmandu team, where Santi Khatiwada is a reserve player. Samson Jung Thapa is the coach while Pabitra Raut is the manager of the team.
