SPORTS BRIEFS: Bernhardt College into quarterfinal

KATHMANDU, Dec 17: Bernhardt College on Saturday advanced into the quarterfinal of boys´ section in The Professional Gyan Carnival Inter-college Basketball Tournament being held in the capital.



Bernhardt defeated Liverpool 37-30 to secure quarterfinal place as the winner of Group C following second consecutive victory. Prabesh Maharjan netted 16 points for Bernhardt. [break]Similarly, Golden Gate International, National Campus and Xavier International also won their respective group stage matches under boy´s category. In girl´s category, Nobel edged past Bernhardt 44-23 riding on 20 points of Rojina Moktan.



GEMS lifts 3X3 title


KATHMANDU: GEMS College on Saturday lifted the men´s 3X3 title of First Saipal A Level Meet-2011 held at host Saipal Academy´s court in Dhumbarahi. GEMS registered a narrow 16-13 win over ACE Institute of Management in the final. Rahul Shakya contributed seven points for the winning side. Modern Indian School finished third with 11-9 win over host Saipal. Ronlak Shrestha netted six points for Modern Indian. The two-day tournament held on league cum knockout format was contested by nine different teams.



Deneb, Innovative triumph


KATHMANDU: Deneb International and Innovative on Saturday won their respective matches in senior boys´ category during the Second Valley-wide Inter-school basketball tournament being held in the capital. Deneb thumped Suryodaya 62-31 and Innovative saw off Kavya 43-12. In other matches, Angel Lord ousted Nawa Jyoti 36-24, Galaxy beat Canvas 36-26 and Teresa thrashed Suryodaya 52-23. Nepal Central also won its match.


NASA clinches Sachindra Memorial


KATHMANDU: NASA College on Saturday clinched the title of First Sachindra Memorial Open Boys Basketball Tournament held at host Nepal Commerce Campus´ court, Minbhawan. NASA registered a hard fought 63-61 win over Premier in the final. Robin Khatri contributed highest 28 points for NASA while Sadis Pradhan scored 19 points for Premier. After going down 11-13 in the first quarter, NASA led the second and third quarter 15-14 and 19-13 which turned to be the base for NASA´s victory. NASA lagged behind 18-21 in the fourth quarter. Rupak Gurung of winning side was declared the most-valuable-player. The tournament is organized in memory of basketball player Sachindra Shrestha who died last year in a plane crash.



Shrestha elected to lead NRT again

KATHMANDU: The general assembly of A division outfit New Road Team (NRT) has given continuity to Narendra Shrestha and Binay Singh Pradhan as its president and general secretary respectively. The general assembly of the seven decade old club elected the 12-member executive committee unopposed on Saturday. Dipakharsha Bajracharya, Dhruba Bikram Shah and Dinesh Suwal are the first, second and third vice-presidents respectively. Earlier, Bajracharya was second vice-president, Shah a member and Suwal treasurer.



Sundar Narshing Joshi will continue as treasurer. Satish Krishna Shrestha was elected secretary and Maheshwar Mulmi, Mahendra Malla, Sailendra Dhawka, Diken Suwal and Nirmal Rajbhandari are elected members. Five members, in the 17-member committee, will be nominated. Of the five, three will be picked from patron committee and two from sports sub committee.



The general assembly also approved general secretary Pradhan´s progress report and treasurer Joshi´s expenses report of Rs 13 million during the fiscal year of 067/68 and estimated budged of Rs 14 million for 068/69.



Unbeaten Birgunj goes top

KATHMANDU: Birgunj Youth Academy on Saturday climbed atop the standings of Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division Football League being held at Nepal Police Academy, Maharajgunj.



Birgunj defeated Samajik Yuva Club 1-0 to register its sixth victory and march on as the only undefeated team in the league. Nisan Nepali scored the lone goal in the 28th minute in Birgunj´s victory.



The result lifts Birgunj with 21 points to the top of the points table pushing behind Star Club with 20 points to the second place. Star has played one match more than Birgunj. Samajik remained unchanged in the 10th place with 10 points.



Meanwhile, the other match to be held between Sankata Club and Laligurans Pulchowk Sports Club was postponed citing technical reason. The match will be played on Sunday.



Himalayan Sherpa crashes out

KATHMANDU: Yeti Airlines Himalayan Sherpa Club crashed out from the quarterfinals of the All India 22nd Meghalaya Invitational Football Tournament being held in Shillong, India. Himalayan Sherpa was defeated 3-0 by local Royal Wahingdoh FC. According to Himalayan Sherpa, the team will leave Shillong on Monday.
