DHANKUTA, Aug 8: Thirty-seven families displaced by a landslide from Sikdim in Tamku-9 of Sankhuwasabha have resettled at Majhkharka of the same village. Nepal Police and Nepal Army soldiers helped families to move to the new location, two hours away from the landslide zone. [break]

Chief District Officer (CDO) of Sankhuwasabha Tulasi Gautam said that immediate problems of landslide have subsided after the resettlement.

Families are living under tents that have been set up in an open field .The Red Cross Society has provided the victims with tents, blankets and utensils, and each family has received Rs 10,000 as relief from the Natural Disaster Rescue Committee. All domestic animals have also been moved to the new location.

“It is difficult to live in this area all year around because of the heavy frost in the winter, which increases the risk of catching typhoid and pneumonia,” said a local, Uttar Kumar Rai. “There is a shortage of drinking water too.” CDO Gautam said the District Development Committee will provide pipes for drinking water as soon as possible.

Landslide victims have complained of insufficient support and have submitted a seven-point letter to the District Administration Office, demanding employment for one family member, land, food and housing provisions, and education for 53 children.

After they ran out of rice, the locals have nothing to eat but barley and potatoes. It is difficult to get rice because of the bad roads and the economic condition of the families. CDO Gautam informed that meetings are being held to address these issues.

The landslide in Sikdim swept away four houses and killed four locals. Nine are still missing. Dozens of houses are at risk of being swept away.
