Thapa made it to the final of U-55 singles while he crashed out from the semifinal in doubles.[break]
In the singles final, Thapa saw off second seeded Indian Ram Mohan Roy in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Thapa is also the defending champions of singles category. Thapa will take on top seeded Indian S Setu for the title. In the doubles final, also held on Wednesday, the pair of Thapa and Rambabu lost to Tulsiram and Prakash Mehra’s pair.
Waderio karate team leaves for India
KATHMANDU: A 12-member Nepali waderio karate team is leaving for Guajarat, India on Thursday to participate in the Second South Asian Waderio Karate Championship to be held there on October 15 and 16. The team consists of nine players and two officials. Sukra Bahadur Rai, Bikash Tamang, Buddharaj Negi, Simon Khatri, Man Bahadur Moktan, Purusottam Singh, Royakta Sing, Manoj Rajbanshi and Amrit Gurung are the players. Harisaran KC, the chief coach and vice president of Nepal Waderio Karate Do Association is the leader of the team. Sahadev Rajbanshi and Sanu Kancha Shrestha of Nepal will conduct the role of judge in the event. Nepal had won six gold and four silver and bronze medals each in the first edition held in Nepal. Meanwhile, National Sports Council Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama bade farewell to the team.
Karki-Kayastha pair into semis
KATHMANDU: Nepali youth players Sakshyam Karki and Pranab Kayastha’s pair advanced into boys’ doubles semifinal of First Asian U-14 Tennis Championship being held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The pair of Karki and Kayastha registered straight sets (2-0) victory over hosts Bangladesh’s pair. According to a statement issued by the National Sports Council (NSC), the duo edged past the pair of Arif Salman and Noor Mohammad 6-4, 6-2.
Chakratirtha Rating Chess from Oct 21
KATHMANDU: Berojgarr Yuva Samuha of Kirtipur is organizing Chakratirtha Cup Open FIDE Rating Chess Tournament from October 21 at Himal Cement Factory, Chobhar in association with Chakratirth Sports Academy. The six-day tournament carries the total cash prize of Rs 130,000. The tournament approved by World Chess Federation and Nepal Chess Association will be held until 10th round in the Swiss League System. The players from outside Kathmandu will be provided with lodging facility. Top 20 players in the open category will be awarded with cash prize in which the top five players will bag purse of Rs 25,000, Rs 13,000, Rs 8,000 Rs 6,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively. Altogether 36 players will be awarded with cash prizes and all the participants will be given certificates.
