The meeting was postponed for an indefinite period after members of the subcommittee felt that the remaining issues of constitution writing could not be sorted out unless a consensus is forged at the top political level, Tek Prasad Dhungana, CC secretary, informed after the meeting. [break]
There had been some serious and positive discussion at today’s meeting on the long-standing issues for the subcommittee to be able to timely incorporate them in the first draft of the new constitution, Dhungana said.
Of late, with major political parties still divided over whether or not to go for a state restructuring commission (SRC), the progress in dispute resolution has slowed down, lending credence to critics arguing that there is now no relevance of the cross-party panel.
The subcommittee headed by UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal is yet to resolve about two dozen issues related to state restructuring, electoral system and forms of governance.
Both the subcommittee meetings scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday had been postponed at the last hour as Nepali Congress has set conditions for seeking an alternative to the proposed state restructuring commission.
