PM felicitates civil servant Mt. Everest climbers

KATHMANDU, July 12: Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal has said the successful climbing of Mt Everest by a team of civil servants has proved that the Nepalis are courageous and adventurous.



Prime Minister Khanal lauded the civil servants who scaled the world´s highest peak while honouring and presenting prizes to them at a function in the Capital on Tuesday. He said the Tourism Year 2011 would be a historic year not only for the tourism sector but also for the peace and constitution writing.[break]



Economic prosperity could be achieved by developing tourism with protection and promotion of touristic sites, he argued.



Nine civil servants scaling Mt Everest were provided with Rs 200,000 each at the function organized by the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation.



Similarly, 15 climbing guides including the team leader and Home Secretary Lila Mani Poudel were honoured on the occasion.



The civil servants climbing Mt Everest are Subir Shrestha, Sanat Kumar Maharjan, Hari Dhakal, Tulsi Ram Bhandari, Hari Prasad Guragain, Gyanendra Kumar Shrestha, Surat Pokhrel and Padma Bahadur Bhandari.



On the occasion, Tourism Minister Khadga Bahadur Bishwokarma said the successful climbing of the world´s highest peak by the civil servants would contribute a lot to the mountaineering tourism.



Team leader Poudel said the mountaineering expedition was started in a bid to show enthusiasm for adventure tourism among the civil servants and draw people´s attention towards melting snow, and environmental pollution and to study the prospects of mountain tourism.



Similarly, Secretary Dr Ganesh Raj Joshi, climber Santa Bahadur Maharajan, Tali Lakpa Sherpa shared the importance of mountaineering and their experience.
