CIAA defends decision to charge 34 police officials

KATHMANDU, Feb 13: With the conviction of only five defendants and acquittal of 31 defendants by the Special Court in the Sudan scam, a serious question arises: Was the decision of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) to indict such a large number of police officers right?

The CIAA had indicted 34 police officials, both incumbent and retired. The decision came under fire from various quarters as even junior police officers, who had participated in the decision to procure the APCs and other logistics acting on chain-of-command compulsion, were not spared. [break]

The court verdict has validated the criticism against the constitutional anti-graft body to some extent as only five defendants have been found guilty.

But CIAA Secretary Bhagawati Kafle, who is also its acting chief, has defended the decision to file the case against such a large number of police officers.

“The case has been established by conviction [of some of the defendants]. It is irrelevant who were convicted and who were acquitted,” said Kafle.
