KATHMANDU, Feb 8: Maoist commanders stalled the ongoing voluntary retirement process in the Surkhet cantonment, demanding that the three combatants who sought police protection after receiving the retirement package Tuesday be presented in the cantonment.

Though the officials from the secretariat for the Special Committee opened their office to hand out the checks to the retiring combatants, commanders did not allow anyone to enter the office, said Balananda Sharma, convener of the secretariat. [break]

But the commanders agreed to let the process resume from Thursday after an “internal” meeting with Maoist leaders Barshaman Pun and Janardan Sharma, who had reached the cantonments to convince the commanders.

"The process will begin from tomorrow [Thursday]," said Maoist leader Sharma about the outcome of the meeting.

Meanwhile, altogether 5,580 combatants have received their paychecks as of Wednesday, said Sharma, adding that all the cantonments would complete the voluntary retirement by Thursday.
