SPORTS BRIEFS: Judo medalists awarded

KATHMANDU, May 18: Nepal Judo Association (NJA) awarded medalists of the Sixth South Asian Judo Championship amidst a function in the capital on Wednesday.



Nepal won two gold, four silver and four bronze medals in the championship that concluded in Islamabad, Pakistan last week. [break]



It is Nepal’s biggest achievement in judo after the success in the Seventh South Asian Games held in Madras in 1995 when Nepal had bagged three gold, three silver and two bronze medals. NJA awarded a cash prize of Rs 10,000 to Saroj Maharjan, who won gold in men’s 66 kg weight category. The gold medal-winning men’s team comprising Ramesh Magar, Raj Bahadur Chand, Deepak Krishna Shrestha, Shiva Baram and Allen Maharjan also received Rs 10,000.



Likewise, coach Bir Bahadur Rana was awarded Rs 5,000 while assistant coach Rohit Kumar Basnet received Rs 3,000. Minister for Youth and Sports Hit Bahadur Tamang handed over the awards and felicitation letters to the winners. Earlier, Nepal Republic Judo Association felicitated the winners and participants of the championship. Minister Tamang and Minister of State for Health Dharmashila Chapagain handed over felicitation letters to the judokas during the function.


Rana sisters into quarterfinals


KATHMANDU: Twin sisters Mayanka Rana and Mahika Rana fixed their quarterfinal berths in the U-12 girls’ singles category of the KESA Group JTI Open Junior Tennis Tournament on Wednesday. Mayanka beat Diva Rana 9-5 while Mahika thrashed Tenzing Sherpa 9-0 in the matches played at the Satdobato Tennis Court. Bijisha Shrestha, Krishna Bista, Karuna Gauchan, Ani Mathema, Bibhuti Karki and Tsering Sherpa also entered the quarterfinals from the group.



In the U-12 boys’ singles category, Immanuel Lim, Saksham Karki, Anjan Thing, Rejan Lama, Chandra Man Rokaya, Samrakshan Bhushan Bajracharya and Kasprit Pandey also fixed their quarterfinal spots. In U-10 boys’ singles, Samrakshan Bhushan Bajracharya, Dipen Khatri, Prashant Tamang and Pranav Khanal advanced into the semifinals. Prakash Sharma, Avi Shrestha, Achal Thapa, Suman Karki, Ananda Gauchan and Abhishek Bastola won their U-16 boys’ singles matches.
