KATHMANDU, Oct 24: Inspector General of the Police (IGP) Prakash Aryal has been charged for neglecting the Supreme Court (SC)’s verdict to detain murder-convict Balkrishna Dhungel. 

Senior Advocate Dinesh Tripathi filed a case at the SC on Tuesday, seeking an appropriate action against IGP Aryal in line with the Section 17 of Justice Administration Act 2016. If found guilty, the accused will face a one-year jail term along with a fine of Rs 10, 000.

The SC had ordered the police to apprehend fugitive murder-convict Dhungel within seven days and present him before the court.

Acting on a writ petition filed by advocate Tripathi, a single bench of Justice Ananda Mohan Bhattarai issued an arrest warrant against the controversial CPN (Maoist Center) leader and former lawmaker Dhungel.

Dhungel was convicted in the murder of Ujjan Kumar Shrestha.
