KATHMANDU, March 4: The condition of founding leader of the Nepali Congress (NC) and former prime minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai deteriorated further on Thursday.

Doctors said Bhattarai´s blood pressure and oxygen saturation have improved from Wednesday with the help of medicines but the kidney functioning has deteriorated further. Doctors maintained that very low urine formation remains the major worry. [break]He passed just 110 ml of urine till Wednesday evening and that dropped to around just 100 ml as of Thursday evening despite being given medication to induce urination.

“We have not found any improvement in his condition and see very slim chances of improvement,” Dr Shyam Bahadur Pandey, who is part of a team of doctors treating the octogenarian leader at Norvic International Hospital, said summing up his condition. “We will nevertheless keep trying as long as not all hope is exhausted,” Dr Pandey added.

“He has problems with kidney, lungs and heart and hence the cerebral function is also very low. We cannot say the medicines are not working as he is being kept alive through them but the desired improvements are not seen,” Dr Pandey said.

Executive Director and Consultant Cardiologist Dr Bharat Rawat said Bhattarai is still in a semi-coma despite improvement in the pulse and blood pressure. “He made some involuntary movements but has yet to regain consciousness and speak,” Dr Rawat stated.

Doctors have not placed him on ventilator as very few patients of that age come out and survive after being on ventilator. He is 86. Poor nutrition is adding to the problem. He has not eaten anything for five days and is being fed through a tube inserted in the stomach via the nose. Oxygen is being given through a bipap machine.

Meanwhile, senior political leaders including Prime Minsiter Jhalanath Khanal, Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala and former prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal reached Norvic Thursday to visit the ailing leader and inquire about his condition. Nepali Congress cadres and members of the general public thronged the hospital and stayed put throughout the day, hoping to hear about any improvement in his condition.

Bhattarai was admitted to the hospital 20 days ago with swelling of the feet and weakness and some abnormal blood reports. He was shifted to the Coronary Care Unit on February 16 after the breathing became heavy and he developed a fever.

A team comprising Dr Rawat, Dr Pandey, Dr Ramesh Chokhani, Dr Bijendra Srivastav, Dr Jay Prakash Jaiswal and Dr Rishi Kafle is involved in his treatment.
