KATHMANDU, Jan 7: Amid reports that the number of people acquiring passport by submitting forged documents are on the rise, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has made it mandatory for all passport seekers to submit documents authenticated by their respective district administration offices (DAOs) while applying for Machine Readable Passport (MRP).

According to a press statement issued by Central Passport Office (CPO) on Friday, an applicant first needs to submit an MRP form and other necessary documents at the DAO that issued his/her citizenship certificate or certificate of minor. [break]

The DAO will give a letter of certification after verifying the details in documents with office records.

All DAOs across the country will send details of certified MRP applications to the CPO on a weekly basis as per the new arrangement.

Among other details, the certification letter of the DAO will include information whether the applicant had acquired a passport earlier. “Only those applications verified by the concerned DAOs can be submitted to Central Passport Office for MRP,” the statement added.

Officials at CPO said the new arrangement will discourage the practice of submitting forged documents to acquire passports.

The government started issuing MRP from December 26 -- five days earlier than the third deadline given by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Since the country missed the original deadline of April 1, MoFA started issuing passports from its own office at Narayanhiti.
