GULMI, Aug 8: A single village in Gulmi exported litchi worth Rs 1 million this year. Chyurek village of Ruru Rural Municipality exported litchi worth Rs 1 million to other districts.
In the previous year, the village had earned Rs 800,000 by selling litchi. Every year the district is exporting litchi worth more than Rs 2.5 million. This year, the price has increased with the production, and so has the income, farmers told Republica.
Farmer Tek Bahadur BK from Chyurek said that this year litchi has seen good production. “Along with the production, market price also has increased this year,” he said: “Our single village has been exporting litchi worth Rs one million to the markets of Tamghas, Ridi, Baletaksar, Butawal and Palpa.”
Tek Bahadur has sold litchi worth Rs 250,000.
Similarly, other villages like Thanpati, Digam, Rupakot, Johang, Harmichaur, Aslewa and Gwadi are also exporting litchi. This year the price of litchi has reached from Rs 50 to Rs 120 per kilogram.
“Vendors come to buy litchi before they are fully grown,” Tek Bahadur said: “Vendors buy litchi at Rs 50-80 per kilogram from the farmers. Litchi produced in Gulmi has been reaching the markets of Palpa and Rupandehi.”
As litchi is more profitable, farmers in Gulmi have been more attracted toward litchi farming. Laxman Gyawali, president of Chyurek vegetable and fruits farmer group said that litchi has been lucrative to the farmers. “Now farmers were earning between Rs 10,000 to Rs 250,000 from litchi,” he said.
According to former Member of Parliament Kamal Raj Shrestha, the District Agriculture Development Office Gulmi has started to provide help on sampling management. There are around 10,000 litchi plants in Chyurek only.
