Under current regulations, a parliamentarian loses his membership if s/he quits the party he is elected or nominated from. Sharma was directly elected from Mahottari Constituency No 4 and according to the regulations, a by-election should be held in the constituency to fill the vacancy.

Elected from TMDP ticket, Sharma quit the party last year to join the Unified CPN (Maoist). He is currently the Maoist central committee member.

Sharma made the headlines of late accusing an Indian Embassy official of threatening him.
