Gurkha soldier succumbs to Afghan injury

KATHMANDU, Aug 13: A Gurkha solider who was injured in an operation accident in Nahr-e-Saraj district of Helmand, Afghanistan on August 10 succumbed to injuries, the British Embassy in Kathmandu said.



The solider, whose identity has not been revealed, died while undergoing treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England on Thursday.[break]



British Army spokesperson has expressed deep sorrow over the loss.



“We recognize that generations of Gurkhas have served the United Kingdom with great courage, sacrifice and distinction; our Gurkha soldiers continue to make a vital and valued contribution to our operations around the world. This sad loss only strengthens our resolve to stabilize Afghanistan and strengthen the Afghan government”, the statement added.



The statement has further said that the government had already informed the next kin of the deceased soldier.
