Strike continues, exam suspended

CHITWAN, March 13: The indefinite general strike called by the Tharu community in Tarai has continued on Friday.



The strike has affected Chitwan and the whole of Tarai. Vehicular movement has been affected owing to the strike called by Tharu Kalyankarini Sabha, Tharuhat Struggle Committee and other organizations protesting the concept of entire Madhes as a single province. [break]



Shot and long-route vehicles that used to arrive in Chitwan or leave Chitwan have not been able to operate owing to the strike. The strike has also shut down schools, shops and factories.



The strike is having a heavy toll on normal life in Narayanghat, Bharatpur, Tandi, Bhandara, Madi, Rampur, Meghauli, Gitanagar, Jagatpur, and Patihani areas.



Tharu protesters started burning tires to obstruct traffic in Narayanghat bazaar from early morning.



The strike has cause the cancellation of district level examination of grade eight that was supposed to take place today.



Tikendra Chowdhary, Chitwan chairman of Tharu Kalyankarini Sabha, said the strike would continue until the demands made by the Tharus are met.



The Tharu community is mainly protesting the government’s decision of bracketing them as Madhesi.
