NEPALGUNJ, Aug. 6: More than 500 houses are at a risk of being swept away after floods in Rapti river began inundating the temporary embankment constructed to stop the river from causing damage.

The embankment has been constructed in order to save Piprahawa, Khadaicha, Holiya, Tepari, Simrana and other villages from inundation by the river.

More than 100 meters of the 1,800 meter long embankment has already been inundated by the swollen river.

There is a need for around 14-kilometer long embankment on both the sides of the river; however, the temporary embankment had to been constructed only to stop immediate damage, Narayan Subedi of the Embankment Project said.

Meanwhile, a team has been sent to the site from Nepalgunj, and is currently taking stock of the damage caused and possible action to stop its further escalation.
