BIRGUNJ, Sept 15: Police have arrested two leaders of Tarai-Madhes Democratic Party (TDMP)--Jitendra Sonal and Nawalkishor Singh--from Nitanpur of Bara district on Tuesday.

Sonal is the general secretary and Singh is the Bara district chair of TMDP, which is part of United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF).The UDMF has been staging demonstrations against some provisions related to Madhes and federal demarcations in the new constitution for more than a month now.

Sonal and Singh have been charged with inciting arson and vandalism against a dozen of industries and five trucks along Parsa-Bara industrial corridor.

According to District Police Office (DPO), a group of agitators led by the leaders vandalized a dozen of industrial units belonging to NIMBUS industrial group and Saurav Enterprises for defying their strike, according to the Morcha. They have also vandalized and burnt down five trucks of Saurav Enterprises.

UDMF cadres had also threatened over 50 industrial houses along Bara-Parsa business corridor, forcing them to shut down in support of their protests, police claimed.

The fire on the vehicles set ablaze by the agitators was brought under control with the help of fire engines, according to police.

Sonal, however, claimed that the protests were peaceful and denied his involvement. "I was arrested while walking on the way," said he.
