ITAHARI, June 6: Police exchanged fires with an unidentified gang at Kaptangunj, a village that shares border with India, in the southern part of Sunsari on Saturday night.

A police patrol team came under fire from the gang prompting retaliatory fire from the police. The police fired two rounds in retaliation against the attackers at midnight, said inspector Badri Tamang. There was no casualty on either side. Tamang said the gang ran away toward India from the village.

Security personnel had reached the area for a patrolling after a rise in cases of motorcycle and cattle theft and robbery. Police suspected that the attackers might be smugglers and opened fire on the police in a bid to frighten them away.

Sunsari Police chief Bhupal Bhandari said the police could not identify the attackers or know their numbers as the incident occurred in the dead of night.

Lately, security personnel of Nepal and India have started patrolling bordering areas in the night in a bid to control smuggling and other crimes.
