"A meeting of the Kathmandu District Security Committee on Monday decided to release them. The decision was taken after an security assessment that said they were no more security threat at present," Laxmi Dhakal, chief district officer, told myrepublica.com. [break]
Police arrested and took 22 Tibetans into preventive detention. Three of them were released following a court order and the another one on health grounds.
Many members of the group wept and hugged well-wishers upon their release following the 20-day detention. Sonam Lama, 35, said many had fallen ill in jail and were "very happy" to be released, AP reported.
"We will not be deterred by these setbacks," said Norbu Dorje, another of the protesters. "We will continue our nonviolent protests against China demanding there should be talks between Dalai Lama and the Chinese government."
Human rights activist Sudip Pathak said he negotiated the release with the government.
