18 killed as bus plunges into Tila in Jumla

Police and army personnel looking to salvage the bus that fell into the Tila River at Gadgudeni of Raralihi in Jumla on Monday killing 18 passengers and leaving 14 injured. The bus had plunged 200 meters into the river.

Three of the 14 injured in critical condition
JUMLA, March 17:
The death toll from Monday morning’s Jumla bus accident reached 18 in the evening, while 14 injured in the accident are receiving treatment.

Three of the injured, who are said to be critical, have been referred to Medical College Hospital of Kohalpur in Banke district.
The bus (Na 4 Kha 4970) heading for Nagam of Kalikot from Jumla Bazaar fell some 200 meters down the road at Raralihi VDC in Jumla district at around 9:30 pm, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Balram Rai.



DSP Rai informed that 14 passengers died on the spot while four others breathed their last while undergoing treatment at Karnali Institute of Health Science, Teaching Hospital, Jumla.

There were 32 passengers on the bus, according to the police. Soon after the incident, a team of Nepal Police and Nepal Army had reached the site to rescue the passengers.

A rescue team led by Chief District Officer Dipendra Raj Poudel of Jumla has sent all the deceased and the injured to the district headquarters.



Bus driver Sagar Budha, 28, of Shanigaun and conductor Harka Bahadur Budha, 24, of Phoi Mahadev are among those killed in the accident.



Meanwhile, CDO Poudel said that accident might have occurred due to brake failure.

Likewise, Nanda Lal Chaulagain, vice-president of Karnali Transportation Entrepreneurs’ Association said that he had requested the bus driver to drive carefully as the road was slippery. The actual reason behind the accident is yet to be ascertained.


According to our Kohalpur based correspondent, three critically injured, who were airlifted to Kohalpur Medical College, are Himali Rokaya, 36, and Shivkali Rokaya, 36 of Shanigaun and Kaliman Sarki, 46, of Chandannath Municipality, Jumla.
