KATHMANDU, Aug 13: Heavy rainfall has resulted in the deaths of 173 people across Nepal due to disasters including floods and landslides in the past two months.
The fatalities are distributed across various regions as follows: 3 people in Kathmandu Valley, 26 in Koshi Province, 7 in Madhesh Province, 31 in Bagmati Province, 54 in Gandaki Province, 33 in Lumbini Province, 8 in Karnali Province, and 11 in Far West Province.
Floods and landslides kill 70 in Province 1
In addition to the fatalities, there have been injuries reported. While 11 people were injured in Kathmandu Valley, 37 were injured in Koshi Province, 11 in Madhesh Province, 23 in Bagmati Province and 46 in Gandaki Province. Similarly, 13 persons were injured in Lumbini Province, 54 in Karnali Province, and 28 in Sudurpaschim Province. The injured have been transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Officials said rescue efforts were launched, with 28 people rescued in Kathmandu Valley, 49 in Koshi Province, 12 in Bagmati Province, 14 in Gandaki Province, 3 in Lumbini Province, 2 in Karnali Province and 5 in Sudurpaschim Province.
Floods have been particularly severe, causing significant loss of life. Officials said 48 persons lost their lives in Koshi Province, 41 in Bagmati Province, 2 in Gandaki Province, 1each in Lumbini Province, Karnali Province, and Sudurpaschim Province. Search and rescue operations for the missing are still ongoing.
The floods have also caused extensive damage, leaving 384 houses inundated, with 275 houses, 140 sheds, 43 bridges, 2 schools, and two government offices damaged. Additionally, 812 animals and quadrupeds have died, and 4,322 families have been displaced due to the disaster.
