KATHMANDU, April 13: Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has urged political parties to search for a common ground in order to forge consensus on some basic principles including constitutional supremacy, rule of law, an inclusive and just socio-political system, federal system, secularism, pluralism, checks and balance, judicial autonomy and press freedom.

In a message issued on the eve of New Year 2067 BS, he said, “I want to assure all that I am always ready to accept any conclusion drawn from open-hearted discussions.” He, however, said he would not bow before any form of extremism. He maintained that peace, democracy and progress can be ensured only by defeating all forms of extremism. [break]

Reiterating that there was no alternative to consensus and cooperation, he said that the peace process should be concluded before the new constitution is promulgated.

“Peace process can conclude only after integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants. For that, a work plan has already been submitted in the special committee. We can complete the task on time if the concerned sides take it seriously,” he said.

Recalling that he became prime minister through a very regular and natural constitutional process, PM Nepal said he was doing his best to save the country from heading toward a serious confrontation.

“When I assumed the office, the country was moving toward confrontation. I have been doing my level best to avoid any form of confrontation and forge consensus,” he said.
