This measure has been taken for keeping a track of the one-horned rhino for its conservation.[break]
The programme of keeping the GPS device has been carried out through joint initiatives of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, the National Trust for Nature Conservation and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
So far the GPS devices have been inserted in the neck of four rhinos, said Chief Conservation Officer of CNP, Narendraman Babu Pradhan.
This system would allow the conservationists to keep track of the movement of the rhinos. In the first phase the GPS devices would be inserted in the neck of eight rhinos in the eastern region of CNP.
The GPS devices will be implanted in the rhinos in other areas in the latter phases of the programme.
Some 24 conservationists have been mobilized for the programme under the direct supervision of Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation, Deepak Bohara.
As per the latest rhino census, there are 408 rhinos in the CNP and out of them nearly two dozen rhinos have been killed due to natural causes or poaching.
