The deceased have been identified as 2-year-old Riya Bogati from Kathamndu, Gaura Devi Khadka, 35, from Gairagaun-3, Khiru Devi Bohora, 35, and Tulsi Bohora, 4, from Gairagaun-2, Junu Bista, 35, and Bhagerathi Gaire, 38, from Baglek VDC and Gyanu Bista, 35, from Kathmandu. [break]
Similarly, Panti Bhandari from Gajari-9, Khem Bohora and Tulsi Devi BK from Gairagaun-4 have been confirmed dead. The police said a dead body remains to be identified.
According to the preliminary investigation by the police, the overloaded jeep veered off the road as the driver lost control of the steering. The jeep hit a tree before falling 500 meter down the cliff. “The jeep was carrying far more people than its capacity. As the driver could not turn the steering, the jeep fell down the road,” said Bharat Bohora, chief at the district police office, Silgadhi.
The whereabouts of the driver and the owner of the jeep, who was inside the vehicle when the accident took place, is not known yet. A search team has been mobilized to find them, the police said. A rescue team from Nepal Army in Doti had reached the spot immediately after the incident while the police appeared at the scene of accident an hour later.
According to the police, four of the passengers died on the spot, six at the Silgadi district hospital and 2 others who were airlifted to Nepalgunj succumbed just after the flight landed there.
The injured have been identified as 18-year-old Keshab Badal, 14-year-old Man Bahadur BK, 13-year-old Ramesh Bhandari and 17-year-old Bharat Ale, among others. The injured are being treated at Doti District Hospital and Sujang Hospital in Dipayal.
