Rai, who was in the most wanted list of Nepal Police for his involvement in robbery and theft escaped at 3 a.m. on Tuesday.
This is the second time Rai has escaped police custody. Eight months ago, he was arrested for unlawful possession of a pistol, but managed to flee Area Police Office, Itahari. Police involvement was alleged in the incident.
Though similar suspicions are doing the rounds, Police Inspector Awadesh Bista, who heads Area Police Office, Dharan, said Rai escaped through a chain gate while the sentry was asleep.
Rai was taken under control and handed over to the police by locals on Saturday night while he was trying to loot one Gopal Lamichhane at gunpoint at Bagainchaline, Dharan-9. Police had said they were investigating Rai´s suspected involvement with Indian robbers and his suspected role as a drug dealer.
The Koshi Regional Police Office has set up a probe committee to find the reasons behind the second escape of a most wanted criminal. The three-member committee headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Uma Shankar Panjiyar has been given five days to submit its report. The police have taken sentry Shyam Shah under control.
