KATHMANDU, May 17: Leaders of United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF), an alliance of five Madhes-based parties, have strongly opposed the 11-province model for state restructuring, earlier agreed by the three major political parties.

During their meeting with top leaders of the three major parties--UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML--at the prime minister´s office in Singha Durbar Thursday afternoon, the Madhesi leaders reiterated that the proposal is not acceptable to them, at any cost. [break]

According to Raj Kishor Yadav, a UDMF, they put forth their strong objection to the ´illegitimate´ three-party agreement and added that the discussion will continue later in New Baneshwor after the parliament´s session beginning in a short while.

Yadav also said UDMF leaders during the meeting stressed that the federal model should be based on the reports by the state restructuring commission and the CA thematic committee.

Over the past few days, Madhesi leaders have also threatened to pull plug on the government if the proposal is put to vote in the Constituent Assembly (CA). They have demanded that the deal on federalism be scrapped immediately.
