BIRATNAGAR, Dec 27: The provincial assembly members close to the Dahal-Nepal faction of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) on Sunday filed a no-confidence motion against chief minister (CM) of Province 1, Sher Dhan Rai, who belongs to the Oli-led faction of the party.

A group of 36 provincial assembly members led by Indra Angbo filed the no-confidence motion against CM Rai at the Provincial Assembly Secretariat this morning. Laxman Tiwari, the other provincial lawmaker, has seconded the proposal.

The rival faction of the NCP led by Dahal enjoys a majority in the assembly of Province 1. With the faction filing a no-confidence motion against CM Rai, the latter has lost his majority in the provincial assembly.

In the 93-member provincial assembly, the ruling party has 67 members. Of these 67 members, the Dahal-Nepal faction has the support of 40 while the Oli-led faction enjoys the support of 20 members.

In their motion, the assembly members have proposed Bhim Acharya as the next chief minister, who belongs to the Dahal-Nepal faction.

The government in Province 1, which is governed by the ruling NCP, has run into trouble, six days after the party suffered a split over the KP Oli-led government's decision to dissolve parliament and announce midterm elections on Sunday this week.

Earlier on Friday, the provincial assembly members close to the Dahal-Nepal faction of the ruling NCP filed a no-confidence motion against chief minister (CM) of Bagmati Province, Dormani Poudel, who is close to the Oli-led faction.
