KATHMANDU, Nov 4: A total lunar eclipse will take place on Tuesday, November 8 on Kartik Shukla Purnima (full moon day). According to the Nepal Calendar Determination Committee, the total lunar eclipse will start at 5:11 in the evening.
The eclipse will be clearly visible after sunset at 05:13 PM, said Surya Prasad Dhungel, executive director of the Committee.
The eclipse will end at 06:34 PM. The eclipse will only be visible from Nepal for one hour and 23 minutes. According to the theologist professor Ramchandra Gautam, the sutak (impurity/defilement) will begin nine hours before the lunar eclipse. From 08:11 AM on Tuesday, consuming food is prohibited except for children, the elderly and the sick.
Professor Gautam also said that only after the eclipse is over at 6:34 in the evening, one can consume food. There is a scriptural saying that chanting and reciting bhajans, bathing, meditating etc during the eclipse will be fruitful. Earlier, a partial solar eclipse took place on the day of Kartik Krishna Aunsi on October 25.
