Sustainable sanitation for health and hygiene

Sustainable sanitation is the system that is economically and technically appropriate to protect the natural and environmental resources. The system includes all aspects from collection, transportation, refining, by-product management to disposal.

Prakash Amatya who has been working actively in sustainable sanitation sat down for My City's regular column Here's Why and expressed why sustainable sanitation is important for sustainable development. Amatya explained how toilet waste management can be productive. He shared, "Recently, we connected public latrine of Ratnapark with bio-gas plant and we are gaining two cylinders of gas every month. This shows that waste management will be beneficial if we apply some scientific and technical systems."

He added, "Sustainable sanitation is not being implemented in Nepal. Though toilets are being made in an adequate number, they are not managed properly and waste is directly connected to natural resources like river. This trend might bring health hazard but if we use proper technologies we can manage it properly without causing any environmental harm.”
