Shailee Theater gears up for ‘Bhuskoaago’

Shailee Theater gears up for ‘Bhuskoaago’

Shailee Theater was planning to create its own theater since its establishment. Although the first plan of having its own theater collapsed after the earthquake of 2015, Shailee Theater expedited the construction of theater in 2017.

Now, Shailee Theater has completed construction of its own theater in Ratopul, Kathmandu and the rehearsal for Govinda Bahadur Malla Gothale's play " Bhuskoaago" is also being done.

BhusKoAago (Fire of Chaff) is a psychoanalytic drama based on a feminine story that shows the surrounding environment of 1956 Nepal. But the relevance of this play still seems strong when the situation is not improved by our patriarchal society. The drama presents the psychological dimension of a married woman, Urmila, who is not allowed to go to her house as her parents-in-law want to abandon her. So, they force her husband to marry another girl. Urmila chooses to live independently after separation from her husband, joins a college.

On the other side, Urmila's husband is fed up with his illiterate second wife. He wants to rearrange his relation with Urmila. However, Urmila, who had a sense of freedom and independence, refuses to go with him. The protagonist, Urmila seeks more from life and starts to refuse the standard of society. Although she had a hard time to decide, she finally determines not to return to her husband's house.

The drama depicts a woman who is like a fire burning inside chaff (bhus) after the abuse by her husband and mother-in-law has presented a protest against male voluntarism and yelling of support and respect for female pride and freedom. It shows the struggling character of women through the main character, who was previously abandoned and later re-educated.

Nabaraj Budathoki directorial drama features six artists—SaraswatiAdhikari as Radha, SagunPokharel as Sarita and Shanti (Double Role), Ashmita Khanal as Grandmother of Urmila, ChandniShahi as Sharadha and Rita(Double Role), Shristhi Acharya as Urmila, and Nima Pandey as Mother of Urmila.

Theater artist Sagun Pokharel says, "Gothale have presented the pains and their constraints and compulsions suffered by women of different age groups in a subtle and poignant way , which made me excited to act in this drama."

Subash Subedi, who plays the supporting role in the direction of the play says, "All the characters are women in this play which was a powerful step by Govinda Bahadur Malla Gothale in that age. Further, the play has studied, interpreted, and analyzed the distributions that have occured in the social, psychological, political, moral and cultural fields, depicting the transitional social political situation. "

The drama ‘BhuskoAago’ will be staged everyday from December 1 to 16 every evening 4:50 pm in the newly constructed Shailee Theater at Ratopul , Kathmandu.
