KATHMANDU, May 3: The government is now going to provide Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) to pregnant and postpartum women.

So far, the government has been providing only iron, folic acid and vitamin A to pregnant and postpartum women. With the help of Helen Keller International Nepal and UNICEF, the government is going to distribute such nutrients, according to the Family Welfare Division of the Department of Health Services.

Although this pill, containing 15 types of essential nutrients, is suitable for pregnant women and new mothers all over the country, the Family Welfare Division said that it will be distributed only in 10 districts in the first phase. "The government has given us the permission to distribute the multi-micronutrients received in aid. Our current budget constraints prevent us from expanding distribution at this time," said the director of the Family Welfare Division, Bibek Kumar Lal.

According to Lal, in the first phase, this pill will be distributed in 10 districts of Lumbini Province - Rupandehi, Arghakhanchi, Nawalparasi, Kapilvastu, Dang, Bardia, Pyuthan, Rolpa, Rukum and Banke. He said that homework is being done about when to distribute.

Neighboring countries India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have been providing micronutrients to pregnant and postpartum women. It contains essential nutrients for the physical and mental development of the pregnant mother and unborn child. 

"Providing micronutrients to pregnant women yields significant benefits," Lal asserts. He suggests that if there is an adequate supply of micronutrients, they could also be extended to girls and others facing deficiency of  essential nutrients.

Lal states that MMS pills will be provided to pregnant women who are in regular contact with healthcare facilities. To receive the supplement, women need to undergo a pregnancy test at a healthcare institution. However, it's important to note that this pill is not suitable for women with conditions such as diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome, thyroid disorders, kidney issues, severe anemia, or high-risk pregnancies. The pill will be available in both tablet and capsule forms.

The MMS pills contain vitamin A, vitamin B12, vitamin D3, vitamin C, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B6, vitamin E, folic acid, iron, zinc, copper, iodine, and selenium. This pill aids in fetal development and reduces the risk of premature birth, stillbirth, and neonatal death.
