World Teachers' Day being marked today

KATHMANDU, Oct 5: The World Teachers´ Day is being marked in Nepal on Friday with a slogan ´Take a stand for teachers´.



The day is marked on October 5 every year since 1966 as per an agreement between the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).[break]



However, the day has been observed in Nepal following the establishment of democracy in 1990.



To mark the day, various organizations working in the sector of education in Nepal are organizing different programmes in Education Ministry today.



On the occasion, Chairperson of SAARC Federation of Teacher´ Union and Chairperson of Nepal Teachers´ Union Mohan Gyawali demanded to ensure equal facility to teachers and also called on stakeholders to increase minimum wages of female teachers serving Early Childhood Development Centres.



Issuing a press release on Thursday, Executive member of World Federation of Teachers´ Union, Asia Pacific Regional Committee and Female Vice-chairperson of Nepal Teachers´ Union Indira Sapkota and Chairperson of Nepal national Teachers´ Organization Baburam Adhikari urged all teachers to assist in the campaign of quality education for all and the targets set by Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
