´Universal access to reproductive health´ is also one of the goals of the Millennium Development Goals.[break]
The United Nations Organization is marking this day globally since 1989 to disseminate information on family planning, poverty alleviation and gender equality.
Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Population Dr Pravin Mishra said that the ministry would organize different programmes including interactions, talk programmes, seminars and others in the capital to mark the day.
According to United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), reproductive health problems remain the leading cause of ill health and death for women of childbearing age worldwide. Some 222 million women who would like to avoid or delay pregnancy lack access to effective family planning. Similarly, nearly 800 women die every day in the process of giving life.
About 1.8 billion young people are entering their reproductive years, often without the knowledge, skills and services they need to protect themselves, the UNFPA stated.
