At a press meet organized to unveil programs to celebrate World Consumer Rights Day, they also asked the government to intensify market monitoring and uphold consumer rights.[break]
Consumer Rights Day is celebrated worldwide on March 15.
“Prices of commodities and services have been raised in an artificial manner. Unfortunately, the government doing nothing to control this,” Jyoti Baniya, general secretary of Forum for Protection of Consumer Rights-Nepal, said.
Different organizations working in consumer rights movement have planned a three-day celebration to mark the day.
They are felicitating Dr Bhagwan Koirala, who recently resigned from the post of executive director of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, as ´Good Manager and Regulating Officer of the Year´ on Wednesday.
Similarly, a daylong interaction program on consumer rights will be held on Thursday. The organizations are also taking out a morning procession and a formal program to mark the World Consumer Rights Day on Friday. They have prepared different slogans like ´control artificial price hike´, ´issue consumer protection act´, ´appoint monitoring officer in all districts´, and ´develop consumer protection fund´ among others to celebrate the day.
“The government has made the consumers suffer by increasing fare of public transportation at a time when we are preparing to mark World Consumer Rights Day,” rued Madhav Timilsina, president of Consumer Rights Research Forum.
