KATHMANDU, Feb 20: The agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) has rejected the political committee formed by the government on Thursday under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa to resolve disputes surrounding demarcation of provincial boundaries.

The UDMF made its reservation public against the committee by issuing a press statement on Friday stating that government had set up the committee unilaterally without consulting stakeholders and such it cannot address the demands related to the provincial demarcations.

The press statement, which is signed by leaders of the seven Madhes-based parties associated with UDMF, accused that the committee was formed with intentions to smoothen Prime Minister's official visit to India.

The statement further warned that the "the decision could be tantamount to derail talks on the demarcation issue." On Thursday, a day before Prime Minister's visit to India, the cabinet had decided to form a 11-member political committee to recommend solutions for resolving the disputes on provincial boundaries. The meeting has however decided to select members of the committee, including members from the agitating Madhes based parties, after the Prime Minister returns from India.
