KATHMANDU, Feb 8: The UCPN (Maoist)’s seventh general convention concludes on Friday, deciding to continue with the incumbent leadership and constituting a 151-member strong central committee (CC), with 98 of the members to the CC being elected today itself.
In the morning, the convention organizing committee´s meeting stuck to its earlier proposal on the strength of the CC despite a demand by convention representatives with party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to keep the number of CC members below a hundred.[break]
The meeting decided to declare the names of its 99 CC members today and nominate the remaining 52 members, later on. The meeting, however, failed to come up with the names of all office bearers due to differing views among the leaders.
As per the party’s existing provision, the CC is responsible for electing office bearers. The convention originally scheduled to conclude Thursday was extended till Friday owing to differing views on the strength of the new CC.
98 members elected to CC
The closed session has elected 98 members to the 151-member strong CC. The name of Nanda Kumar Prasai who was on the list of 99 members has been omitted as he has been given responsibility in the party´s advisory panel.
Former PLA protest
Former PLA mostly from the Third Division cantonment have protested outside the convention hall, saying some of the leaders on the list are corrupt and, therefore, they do not deserve positions in the CC.
Sherchan, disciplinary commission head
Meanwhile, the newly-elected CC held its meeting and decided to continue with Pushpa Kamal Dahal as party chairman and Baburam Bhattarai and Narayankaji Shrestha as vice-chairmen. The meeting, however, elevated party Secretary Posta Bahadur Bogati to the post of general secretary. The CC has decided to pick other office bearers, holding meeting in Kathkmandu, later on. The party has also named Amik Sherchan as head of its disciplinary commission.
