“In the first phase, we are expanding our business in three different places in the valley and we plan to open our first outlet outside the valley in Pokhara by the end of 2011,” said Min Bahadur Gurung, the executive director of Bhat-Bhateni Supermarket and Departmental Store. Gurung said that the major interest behind expansion was to address the growing consumer needs in the Fast Moving and Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector. He also expressed the group´s determination of providing international standard shopping experience to Nepalese customers through its stores.

According to Gurung, the company has made a total investment of over 2 billion in setting up its four branches in different parts of the country. “The group has invested over Rs 500 million each on its four upcoming stores,” Gurung told Republica, adding that the company had allotted two and a half years time for the completion of the projects, but has been able to finish them within 11 months. “By doing so we have been able to keep up to the company´s slogan -- Save time, Save Money,” Gurung proudly stated.

With the operation of four stores, the company will be providing direct employment to over 1,100 people. “Around 300 employees will be deputed at each stores,” Gurung explained. He further added that 95 percent of new hires would be women.

The five storied store in Koteshwor, spread over an area of 125,000 square feet, will be bigger than the company´s outlet in Maharajgunj. The Koteshwor based Bhat-Bhateni Supermarket has a basement parking facility for 125 four wheelers and 150 two wheelers. The company plans to launch three floors at Koteshwor in the first phase.

The other stores in Bouddha, Pulchowk and Pokhara are spread over an area of 175,000 square feet, 160,000 square feet and 105,000 square feet respectively. The two stores in Bouddha and Pulchowk will have seven stories, however, Bhat-Bhateni Store at Pokhara only have four stories.

The company´s store at Koteshwor will house over 125,000 varieties of products. The upcoming stores, like the existing ones, will feature kitchenware, foot wears, apparels, electronic appliances and fresh fruits, vegetables and furniture products from Thailand and Malaysia. The company has collaborated with the Furniture Land, a leading furniture importer, and The Bakery Café, a fast food chain. The company has sought technical support from China for setting up the layout and delivery of services at all the four stores.

With an impressive growth history of over 25 years, Bhat-Bhateni has earned high reputation among Nepalese with a basic tag line of seeking customer´s satisfaction through volume sales at lower profit margin. Bhat-Bhateni´s two stores at Bhat Bhateni and Maharajgunj currently sell over 100,000 products from 600 local and international suppliers. According to the company more than 10,000 people visit its stores daily.
