KATHMANDU, Dec 27: The Tharu community of Kathmandu Valley will be celebrating the upcoming Maghi festival at the Dashrath Stadium. The venue was finalized on Sunday during a meeting of the Tharu Kalyankari Sabha, the main organizing committee.

Maghi festival is celebrated as New Year by the Tharu community on the first day of the month of Magh, which falls on Janurary 15 this year. The organizing committee claimed that preparations for the festival are underway in full swing."We will leave no stone unturned to make the festival a huge success," said Satya Narayan Chaudhary, coordinator of the organizing committee.

In order to delegate responsibilities, the organizing committee has set up various sub-committees, which include finance committee, promotion committee, stage management committee among others, according to Chaudhary.

Chaudhary added that there will be over 60 stalls during the program. However, the main attraction will be the display of Tharu tradition, culture and handicrafts.

According to the organizers, around Rs 2 million will be incurred as expenses for the celebration. They also claimed that over 30,000 people will most likely attend the program.

The government decided to include Maghi as a national festival from 2008. Around 200,000 people from the Tharu community have been working in the Valley, according to the Tharu association.
