SPORTS BRIEFS: NIMS, Daffodil clinch titles

KATHMANDU, Dec 20: Defending champions NIMS and Daffodil on Monday clinched the titles of the Second Jiten Thakuri Memorial Inter-school Basketball Tournament in the girls´ and boys´ categories, respectively.



The hosts NIMS defeated Daffodil 26-12 in the girls´ final held at their home court in Tokha to defend their title. [break]



Bina Karki contributed 10 points for the hosts. Her teammate Sangeeta Shrestha was adjudged the most valuable player (MVP). In the boys´ title clash, Daffodil edged past Wilson Academy 42-36 with the help of 16 points from Sangey Rapsel, who was later declared the MVP.


Big wins for NYC



Nakhipot Youth Club (NYC) and Whitehouse College won their respective matches in the women´s category during the Second South Siders Open Basketball Tournament at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium on Monday.



Sushma Thapa scored 20 points for NYC as they thrashed Godavari Alumni Association 50-24. Whitehouse struggled to register a 34-33 win over Golden Gate with the help of 12 points from Namita Thapa. The highest scorer of the match was Anisha Tulachan of Golden Gate with 16 points.



In the men´s category, Bikram Joshi contributed 18 points for Whitehouse as they hammered Xavier International 76-33. In another match, Unique Group eased past Princeton College 89-40.



Reliance, National, VS triumph



Reliance International Academy, National Campus and VS Niketan registered victories in their respective matches in the boys´ category of the Second BST Inter-college Basketball Tournament on Monday.



Defending champions Reliance defeated LRI 28-16 in the match held at the court of BST College, Gongabu. National registered a 45-29 win over Xavier International while VS Niketan thrashed CCRC 52-20 with the help of 20 points from Subash Pun.



In the girls´ category, Xavier International defeated Orient 29-11 riding on Seema Karki´s 14 points. Likewise, Trinity ousted Reliance 24-18.


Kayastha, Gauchan in QF



Pranjal Kayastha and Anand Gauchan advanced into the quarterfinals of the U-16 boys´ singles in the Ninth Jayakar Memorial National Junior Tennis Tournament on Monday.



Kayastha thrashed Chiranjivi Lama 9-1 and Gauchan saw off Abhishek Basnet 9-6 at the Satdobato Tennis Complex. Other players to make it to the last eight are Suyash Rajbhandari, Surya Bir Rana, Ganesh Karki, Milan Rokaya and Suman Karki.



In the U-16 girls´ singles, Rabina Gurung hammered Sofiya Chhetri 9-0. In the U-12 girls´ singles, Shivalika Rana, Sachi Gurung, Bibhuti Karki, Anne Mathema and Deewa Rana secured quarterfinal berths.



In the U-12 boys´ singles, Egill Sigurdson, Samrakshan Bhushan Bajracharya, Chandra Man Rokaya, Sandesh Paudel, Arjun Dhungel, Avash Malla, Abhi Shrestha, Shirish Gurung, Subodh Udas and Kastup Pandey won their respective matches.


National Football Association formed



Nepal Sports Federation on Monday formed National Football Association (NFA) and National Sports Workers´ Association (NSWA). Sunil Kapali has been appointed the coordinator of NFA while Rajendra Neupane is the deputy coordinator. The other members of NFA are Rabindra Das Shrestha, Mohammad Samim Ullah, Bishnu Mahato, Shyam Shilpakar, Shyam Shrestha, Krishna Bhakta Manandhar, Chhiring Gurung, Rabindra KC, Basanta GR and Kumari Rai. Meanwhile, Ganesh Lama has been appointed the coordinator of the 11-member NSWA.



Rating chess from Wednesday



The Himalayan Chess Club is all set to organize the Man Bahadur Magar Memorial Rating Chess Tournament from Wednesday at the Vision 20-20 hall of the National Sports Council. The four-day event will be held in the Swiss League format. Altogether 40 players, which include 30 rated players, have registered for the tournament. Nepal Chess Association´s target of producing 200 rated chess players within 2010 will get support from the tournament, according to the organizers. The tournament will conclude on December 25.



NASA win in sudden death



NASA College advanced into the semifinals of the Hosanna Group First Christmas Peace Cup 2010 football tournament defeating Bauddha Football Club (BFC), a first division club, 3-2 in sudden death on Monday.



The regular 90 minutes of the Group B match held at the Chyasal ground ended in a goalless draw. The match went to penalty shootout after the teams were unable to score even in the 14 minutes of added time.



However, the tiebreaker also ended in a 2-2 draw. Buddha Lama and Som Thapa scored for BFC while Bijay Tamang and UD Gurung scored for NASA.

NASA´s goalkeeper Raju Yogi then scored the decider during sudden death after his teammate Rakesh Lama and BFC´s Makar Dhwaj Gurung and Manish Lama had missed their spot kicks. Yogi was later adjudged the man of the match.



Workers Martyrs´ Memorial Club will take on Christian Sports Club and NASA will face Saraswati Youth Club in the semifinals on Tuesday.



New Zenith, Panga in semis



The hosts New Zenith along with Panga advanced into the semifinals of the Second New Zenith Cup Inter-school Basketball Tournament in the senior boys´ category on Monday. The hosts defeated Swarnim School 57-39 riding on 26 points from Dinkar Rajbhandari. Panga beat Dallu English School 69-32.



Rulesh Maharjan contributed 24 points in Panga´s victory. Other teams who have secured semifinal berths are Pushpa Sadan and Rara Hill. In the junior boys´ category, the hosts thrashed Pushpa Sadan 35-6 with the help of 16 points from Prateek Shrestha.
