SPORTS BRIEFS: Twin wins for NIMS, Daffodil

KATHMANDU, Dec 12: Host Niten Memorial School (NIMS) and Daffodil School registered twin wins in the Fourth Jiten Thakuri Memorial Inter School Basketball Tournament on Wednesday as both the boys´ and girls´ teams of the two schools notched up victories at the host´s court in Tokha, Kathmandu. In the boys´ section, defending champion NIMS saw off The Excelsior 41-30, while Daffodil beat Reliance 35-28.



Likewise, the girls´ team of NIMS defeated Brihaspati Vidhya Sadan 15-12, while holder Daffodil edged past Oasis 16-11. [break]



Rupy´s, Malpi triumph



KATHMANDU
: The boys´ basketball teams of Rupy´s International and Malpi won their respective matches during the First British Council A-Level Sports Meet on Wednesday. Rupy´s defeated Lumbini 37-32, while Malpi beat Kathmandu Valley 32-20 in the tournament organized by the British Council. In other matches of the day, GEMS saw off Wilders 39-28, Orient beat Saipal 38-20, Trinity thrashed Xavier International 47-32 and MIS edged past King´s College 35-32.



Neric wins opening match



KATHMANDU
: Host Neric Academy got off to a winning start in the Second Neric-Zenith Inter School Basketball Tournament in both senior girls´ section as well as junior boys´ category on Wednesday. In a low scores game, the senior girls´ team of Neric beat Bauddha Children Heaven 11-6. In the junior boys´ section, Neric routed Grammar School 23-4 on its home court in Shankhamul. In another match of the same category, Gyan Niketan hammered hapless Bauddha Children Heaven 26-2.



Gurung sets new national record



KATHMANDU
: Nepali swimmer Sirish Gurung set a new national record in the ongoing 11th FINA World Swimming Championship in Istanbul, Turkey on Wednesday. According to Jagat Man Shrestha, general secretary of Nepal Swimming Association, Gurung clocked 2 minutes 10.09 seconds in the 200 meters freestyle to break the national record of 2 minutes 17.10 seconds, which was also in his name. Gurung had set that record only a few months ago in Kathmandu during the Second NSA Swimming Championship.



Druk Air golf on Saturday



KATHMANDU
: Druk Air of Bhutan is organizing the 2nd Druk Air Open Golf Tournament at the Gokarna Golf Cub on Saturday. The event to be played over 18 holes will be held under stableford 3/4 handicap allowance format. The event aimed at strengthening friendly relations between Bhutan and Nepal will be participated by 100 golfers including 28 from Bhutan. Meanwhile, the golfers will also play a friendly match with the members of Royal Nepal Golf Course on Thursday and Gokarna Golf Club members on Friday.



School badminton in Kanchanpur



KATHMANDU
: Kanchanpur District Badminton Association is organizing Readmore All Nepal Inter-school Badminton Championship in Mahendranagar, Kanchanpur from December 17-19. The event, to carry total cash prize of Rs 214,000, will feature boy´s and girl´s competition in U-19 singles and U-15 singles. Veteran doubles and super veteran doubles will feature players above 45 and 55 years age category respectively. The national tournament being held after 28 years in Kanchanpur district is being sponsored by Readmore Publishers and Distributors. Ratan Tandon is the title sponsor of U-19 events and late Pukar Acharya´s family has sponsored the title of U-15 category. Acharya died some six years ago during a car accident in America. The expected cost of the event is Rs 954,000.
