SPORTS BRIEFS: Valley Public, Daffodil clinch titles

KATHMANDU, June 9: Valley Public School and Daffodil clinched the titles of the First Bagmati Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Wednesday in senior girls´ and senior boys´ categories respectively.



Valley Public registered a tough 30-29 win over TIA in the final match. Samikchhan Bista, who was later adjudged the most valuable player (MVP), contributed 22 points for the winners. [break]



TIA´s Pratima Malla bagged the award for the highest scorer of the tournament with 81 points while Valley Public´s Laxmi Shrestha was declared the best three-pointer.



Meanwhile, Daffodil edged past Greenland 46-42 with a narrow margin to claim the title in the senior boys´ category. Karma Sherpa contributed 17 points for Daffodil while Rodin Rai was adjudged the MVP.



Rakesh Shrestha of Golden Peak got the award for the highest scorer for 118 points while Greenland´s Dipesh Karki bagged the award for the best three-pointer.



Daffodil and Unique finished third in the girls´ and boys´ categories respectively.





Inter-regional volleyball and athletics tournament begins



KATHMANDU, June 9: Bimal Basnet won the boys´ 100m race during the first day of the School Level Inter-regional Nationwide Volleyball and Athletics Tournament on Wednesday. Parwati Timsina won the title of 100m race in girl´s category.



Rabin Chaudhary emerged victorious in the boys´ 400m race. Likewise, Kriman Kumal led the boy´s 1,500m race while Sushma Rai finished first in the girls´ 1,500m race.



Asharam Chaudhary won the boys´ triple jump. In the girls´ triple jump, Dilmaya Karki secured the top spot. Rajkumar Jimi and Anju Chaudhary bagged gold in shortput in the boys´ and girls´ categories respectively.



Meanwhile, Far-Western Region, Mid-Western Region, Eastern Region and Western Region entered the semifinals of the volleyball tournament in boys´ category while the girls´ teams of Western Region, Central Region, Mid-Western Region and Far-Western Region qualified for the last-four derby.



The three-day event is being organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Council at the Dasharath Stadium.
