In Top Spins this week, we list down the songs that made it to the #1 spot last year on the Pop Charts on the countdown you can count on, Megatops on Hits FM 91.2. If you didn’t get to follow Top Spins the whole year, this is the chance to get some more music to your digital shelves.[break]
American actress, singer, record producer, dancer, television personality, and fashion designer, Jennifer Lopez was probably the hottest thing that ever happened to the music industry after Mariah Carey and she’s proved us right.
“On The Floor” was her first #1 single from her album “Love?” featuring Pitbull, and the floor was burning in KTM city and made the world dance to her beats! Beyonce too ran the world with the girls, with her single “Run The World (Girls)” taken off her album “4” and it ruled the charts, courtesy your requests on Hits FM 91.2, for three whole weeks at the top spot.
For Black Eyed Peas, it was The END before The Beginning, which is their album. The group released “The Time (Dirty Bit)” as the set’s lead single which ultimately became a club anthem and it still is.
The best part about the song was the sampling of Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes’ Oscar-winning 1987 hit ballad “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” from the movie Dirty Dancing, which, by the way, is an awesome movie! It was an exciting transformation but it was able to spend only a week on top of the charts here in Kathmandu. Also, Coldplay came out with their new album titled “Mylo Xyloto” and the first release, “Paradise” is doing really well in the charts, till date. Their new single with Rihanna, “Princess of China,” too, is charting up, all thanks to airplay!
On the brighter side of things, Mick Jagger moves suddenly sprang back to life last year with Maroon 5’s single featuring Christina Aguilera, “Moves Like Jagger.” The video also boasted Jagger showing off his moves and the remix single of the song has been hitting the clubs pretty hard.
Newbee Jessie J counts as one of the best newcomers of last year. Her debut effort, “Who You Are” is a must-have for it has the big hit “Price Tag” featuring B.o.B.

She wrote the tune with American songwriters Dr. Like and Claude. Her collab with B.o.B made her take five plane journeys to record the song together because he was touring and we’re glad that the single hit the #1 spot.
Katy Perry, on the other hand, has had series of hits and in 2011, “Last Friday Night (TGIF)”, was something that was exciting last year; but for Perry, 2012 didn’t start on a good note as her 14-month marriage is coming to an end.
It’s as if everything One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder touches turns into a hit! We have witnessed a number of his productions for artists making hits from Timbaland to Beyonce to Kelly Clarkson, and this year, he also helped out our Miss Sunshine Colbie Caillat! Her hit “Brighter Than the Sun” was written as well as produced by Tedder himself. And I must admit, it did sound quite different than Caillat’s previous materials, which is a good thing, provided it sounds good.
Also, Country Girl Taylor Swift was honored as Billboard Magazine’s Woman of the Year in 2011 and her third album, “Speak Now,” has been nominated for Best Country Album and “Mean” has been nominated for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance for the Grammy Awards this year.
Her single “The Story of Us” hit the coveted spot on Megatops on Hits FM 91.2.
The future is uncertain but expectations and anticipations do make it exciting sometimes. Like pondering on what is going to pop up next from the music world, will there be another surprising new act or comebacks? Such questions aside, let’s hope 2012 is going to be as musically extravagant as 2011! Perhaps, we’ll have someone interesting as Bruno Mars, although we’re sure we won’t find anyone like him.
His debut album “Doo-Wops & Hooligans” from the Hawaii-born singer-songwriter and music producer is a keeper, especially because it caters different flavors to different kinds of music lovers. From pop to pop rock to R&B to pop-reggae, the disc has it all, and coming from pop/R&B genre is the single “Grenade.”
His single entered the charts in March 2, 2011 and it managed to top it in five weeks and stayed up there for three whole weeks. No surprise why he stayed there!
With hope, 2012 is going to see something even more exciting, musically. Here are some songs that were released in the past two weeks on Hits FM 91.2 and ready to climb the charts here in Kathmandu.
1. Rihanna – You Da One
2. Nicki Minaj Ft Rihanna – Fly (DJ Mike D Remix)
3. Adam Lambert – Beg for Mercy
4. Coldplay – Charlie Brown
5. Nickelback – This Means War
6. Jack Johnson – In the Morning
7. Lady Antebellum – We Owned the Night
