KATHMANDU, July 15: Shower gels have become dearer by as much as 17 percent in the local market due mainly to rise in transportation cost and price hike in international market.

Smriti Dhakal, sales executive of Blue Bird Mart at Tripureshwar, said the price of shower gels has increased by 5-17 percent depending on brands due to price rise in international market itself. [break]She, however, added that rise in prices has not affected sales. “As shower gels are mostly used by upper middle class family, minor price hike does not affect sales,” Dhakal added.

The fresh price hike means customers have to pay Rs 10-Rs 25 more for 250 ml pack of shower gels. Yardley, Dove, Axe, Adidas, Lux, Nivea, Fa and Palmolive are some of the popular brands of shower gels available in Nepal. These shower gels are imported mostly from countries like India, Thailand and Indonesia.

“Rise in transportation cost and increase in price by the manufacturing company itself have led to increment in the prices of shower gels in the local market,” said Anteem Ranjit, branding manager of Bigmart at City Center.

Price of shower gels differs according to the brand and its composition. A 250 ml pack of Yardley is now selling at Rs 350, up by Rs 25 compared to last summer.

Similarly, customers are paying Rs 285 for a 250 ml pack of Dove shower gel which was available at Rs 275 last year. Axe (250 ml), which was available at Rs 160 last year, now costs Rs 175, while a 250 ml pack of Adidas shower gel is available at Rs 197, up from last year´s Rs 180. Likewise, 250 ml packs of Fa, Lux and Nivea have become dearer by Rs 10 each and are selling at Rs 195, Rs 180 and Rs 190 respectively.

People go for shower gels because they help keep skin clean as well as scented. “Shower gels are formulated for advanced skin care and each time people take a bathe, they will feel soft and supple skin,” he added.
