Stressing that it is not enough for the government to merely write in books or proclaim in speeches that agriculture is a priority, Dr Koirala urged the government to address the farmers’ demands without delay. “Is it enough for the government to just write in books and make speeches saying agriculture is a priority?” Koirala wrote on social media. “It is very tragic that farmers, along with sugarcane plants, have had to come to the streets in protest. Their demands must be met immediately.”
Dr Koirala raised concerns about how farmers are unable to get fertilizer during the planting season, are forced to stand in long queues when they should be working in their fields, have to dump milk on the roads, and face repeated delays or subsidy cuts in payments for sugarcane — the country’s major cash crop. He questioned how Nepal could ever achieve food self-sufficiency under such circumstances.
