KATHMANDU, May 8: Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (MoPIT) has said an estimated Rs 629 million would be required to rebuild its office buildings and roads damaged by the earthquake.

The amount, however, does not include cost to rehabilitate of Barabise-Tatopani section of Araniko Highway which is badly damaged by the earthquake as the Chinese government is already preparing to rebuild the section.

MoPIT has calculated the loss and damage of roads and other official infrastructures in current rates at around Rs 252 million.Tulsi Prasad Sitaula, secretary of MoPIT, said Babarmahal-based office of Department of Roads (DoR) and two highways that connect Nepal with China -- Araniko Highway and Pasang Lhamu Highway -- have suffered major damage. "We can rebuild damaged roads within a year," he said, adding, "The government should allocate necessary budget for that through regular programs."

The Syafrubesi-Rasuwagadhi section of Pasang Lhamu Highway is yet to open. According to Sitaula, works are underway to make the road operable at the earliest.

According to Sitaula, bridges have not sustained major damage in the quake. "Minor cracks have been seen in the bridge over Trishuli River at Mugling and another bridge over Marshyangdi River on the way to Gorkha Bazaar. Both the bridges, however, are safe for vehicular movement," Sitaula said, adding that maintenance works will be carried out soon.

MoPIT has estimated the cost of renovating DoR's building at Rs 50 million.

"There are multiple cracks in the building and some parts have crumbled," he said, adding the estimated cost is based on preliminary assessment of the building and that detailed assessment is underway.

At present, DoR staff members are operating from tents erected in the department premises.

Similarly, an estimated Rs 50 million would be required to repair some sections of Pasang Lhamu Highway. MoPIT has estimated the cost of rehabilitating Tinkune-Suryabinayak Road at Rs 35 million. The road has sunk in Kaushaltar and Lokanthali. Likewise, an estimated Rs 30 million would be required to rebuild Division Road Office at Khurkot and its retaining wall.

MoPIT has estimated the cost of reconstructing Gorkha-Barpak road at Rs 18.5 million. The road has suffered severe damage from landslides. Similarly, an estimated Rs 20 million would be required to repair retaining wall of Kakani-Tadi road, according to MoPIT officials.
